W4: A World Without Borders

In general, humans live in different countries with different cultures, politics, and environments. In fact, these are due to the national borders which divided the world into many other countries. There are 195 countries in the world today, with 193 from the United Nations while Vatican City and the  State of Palestine are the two countries of non-member Observer States (Saunders, T., 2024). However, would you sometimes think about the question, what if a world where national borders do not exist? Would humans live more peacefully and comfortably due to no conflict from the different countries and cultures, or vice versa? Now we will discuss the effect on each sector if a world does not exist with a national border.

Effects on Personal Identities

A world without borders will weaken the concept of national identity, and give way to global and regional identity. There may be only one nationality for everyone so they have the same rights. Hence, it will reduce the racist problem and strengthen the relationship among all people.

Effects on Politics

In my view, there will be a global government to manage the whole world if there is no national border. This government will have the right to formulate and implement laws and policies for the whole world to ensure fairness and stability globally. But there is a problem which is the conflict about the government management system, whether it should be democracy, republic, or dictatorship. It should be solved by getting opinions from everyone. Besides, the resources will be allocated fairly among the world and this helps to decrease the gap between rich and poor. Since there is no difference between nations, hence it will reduce the chances of war and geopolitical conflicts, and humans can live in a safe world. However, a new global security and defense system should be established to overcome the new security challenges.

Effects on Economic

The elimination of borders can facilitate more trade by removing tariffs and customs regulations, leading to the boosting of economic growth. Other than that, the employment rate will be increased due to the mobility of the labor market. This is due to the reason that everyone can move freely in searching a better job opportunities, and have various choices in the area of job offered. To give an example, the government can implement a policy, that sets a minimum wage for workers to ensure living quality, and reduce the problem of poverty. However, if everyone chooses the almost same area of working opportunities, it causes a lack of labor in some of the unpopular sectors such as construction and services works. Economics can grow well in terms of tourism. People do not need a Visa to travel to other countries, it will be smoother and reduced time-consuming. However, precautionary ways should be taken by police and related authorities to prevent the rising of crimes.

Effects on Social and Cultural

In terms of society and culture, there will be more frequent exchanges of different cultures from different races which helps to increase cultural integration. For instance, a world with no borders may appear in one or more global languages for better understanding and communication. Since we now need to study many languages together such as mother language, foreign language, and countries' formal language, without borders, we can use the same language to prevent misunderstanding. At that time, except for the traditional festivals for different races, there will be a global festival such as Diminishing of National Borders Day.

Conclusion (Potential Benefits and Challenges)

In conclusion, although these ideas are idealized, they also show the far-reaching changes that may occur in the political, cultural, and economic fields in a world without borders. For example, as I mentioned above, there are challenges such as labor market imbalance, human rights and equality, security problems, and technological and environmental problems. To overcome those challenges, a world without national borders should improve the cooperation between everyone since we are of the same nationality. Through innovation and cooperation, humans can create a more inclusive, fair, and sustainable global society.
