Redesigning High-Tech Bookshelf

Introduction

Bookshelf, a furniture that is in most people's houses to place books and anything we like such as collectible figurines, photo albums, and ornaments. In today's digital age, a traditional bookshelf is no longer sufficient to meet the demands of modern living. Therefore, a high-tech bookshelf is preferable to just a storage option for books to provide more features to us. 

Common Problem

As a reading lover, I am a person who likes to buy many books and read them anytime I am free. As long as it attracts my attention, it will be on my bookshelf later on. Since a bookshelf is of utmost importance to me, I have faced some problems when using a bookshelf. Not only for me but surely these problems are faced by others too.

  • Messy and cannot find the book we want: When we have bought a lot of different types of books, we will either simply put them into bookshelf or sort them according to our own rules. However, we will realize that there are difficulties in finding out what books we have read and what books we have bought recently over time (Hiroyuki Shimada, n.d.). Hence, we need to have a solution to overcome this problem which will be discussed later under the design concept.
  • Lightning problem: A traditional bookshelf will not include lightning. Sometimes we will need to find books from a big bookshelf but we have no sufficient light for the down levels of the bookshelf due to the light coming from the ceiling lamp. It is a very frustrating problem because it is quite likely we will never get the book we want.

Design Concept


The image above is the draft of the high-tech bookshelf that I drew including the redesign concepts with the features to overcome the problems mentioned above and improve user experience. 

  • Voice-Controlled and Automatic Retrieval System: To overcome the first problem I have mentioned above, we can install a technological system that is voice-controlled and automatic retrieval. To illustrate the system in detail, when we need to find a specific book from our bookshelf, we can first voice out the book title. When the voice-controlled system detects the title, it will retrieve the book we want automatically. By the way, the premise is we need to have a system to let us key in the data of all the books.
  • Touchscreen Panel for data key-in: There should be a touchscreen panel and system on the bookshelf. Before we place a new book on the bookshelf, we will be required to key in the data of the book such as the title, category, and update the page every time we have read. It will ease us in searching for the books rather than finding ourselves. Apart from that, the touchscreen pad can detect the surrounding temperature.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): First, AI of the high-tech bookshelf can help to develop a rule according to everyone's ideas by giving us a better place to put our books, such as sorting all the books by categorizing them into different languages, novels, reference books, self-development, suspense type, and so on. After we have keyed in the title and category of a book into the system by touchscreen panel, the AI will directly provide the actual place for the specific book. Other than that, sometimes when we are tangled about what book we want to read, AI will show the book that we have half-reading, or provide a suggestion according to the temperature detected. For example, when there is a sunny day with high temperatures, comparatively joyful and easy-to-read books may be suggested.
  • Adjustable Lightning: There will be an LED light installed in the bookshelf on every level to ease our sight when finding the books. Besides, it can be used as a decoration for a relaxing atmosphere in our room. It has another chargeable benefit as it will be very useful when there is an electric short.
  • Bluetooth Speaker: The high-tech bookshelf will have a Bluetooth speaker to play music. Significantly, most people enjoy music when they are reading books as well as just staying at home. A built-in Bluetooth speaker can always connect to our phone and play the music we like anytime.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, if this high-tech bookshelf have been successfully innovated, it will satisfy most people by meeting their demands and provide everyone a better experience especially those who enjoy reading like me. Let us wait for it!
